She’s Angry! Mother Nature, that is….

In case you didn’t notice, the wind was howling in the harbor tonight. Boston Harbor is under a Gale warning, with gusts up to 35 kts. The harbor was full of 2-3 feet white caps tonight, and driving home, I saw sand being blown off the beach onto the road.

Watching these conditions made me fell less bad about not having my boat in for the season yet- tonight wouldn’t have been a good night to be out. This shot from Steamboat Marina in Hull sums it up pretty well- note both the flags and the windmill.

The Ugliest Fish You Can Catch in the Northeast

The ugliness of the fish I seem to catch never ceases to surprise me. I will be doing regular fishing updates once the season get underway, but for now, here are some of the ugliest fish I have caught in the past.*

1) The Spiny Dogfish: This is a habitual offender in the waters off Boston Harbor- biting a silver jig when I am hoping to land a nice Cod.  I got this one about 3 miles due East of Graves Light, but if you jig anything shiny off the bottom for long enough in deep water, you are bound to come up with a Dogfish.  Its shark-like appearance looks menacing, but the real danger is the spine behind the dorsal fin.  Handle with care so as not to be impaled!  Conclusion: I love the namesake beer– not a huge fan of the fish itself. Definitely one of the ugliest fish you can catch.

2) The Cusk:  This was a new one for me last year, but I discovered that this is a less common but indigenous bottom dweller found in deep water off the North Atlantic coast. I was on anther Captain’s boat for this one, and we had to throw her back quickly as these things are not allowed to be kept (not sure who would want to keep one.)  This is more like a big ugly eel than a fish.  This is the only picture I took….I didn’t want to get any closer. Certainly one of the ugliest fish in the entire ocean.
3) The Skate: This is an ugly, stingray-like creature that can turn up very close to shore. I caught this one right off the Governors Flats, just east of Logan Airport.  It was near dusk, hence the poor photo quality. Still easy to tell that this is one of the ugliest fish out there.

4) The Sea Robin: This has to be the winner….the picture speaks for itself. I think this is the ugliest fish I have ever seen in my life.
I don’t think you could find an uglier group of fish.  What is the ugliest fish you have ever caught?*Please note that the Cusk, Sea Robin, and Skate were all promptly released back into the water unharmed.

Boston Harbor Picture of the Week: Sunset

With days like today in March (it’s expected to hit 80 degrees this afternoon), it’s hard not to get excited about being out on the open seas soon.  This weather will probably return to more normal temperatures by the weekend so it’s still a little premature to get the boat in the water.  It is a great reminder that days that end with sunsets like this will be here shortly:

We are planning on posting a Boston Harbor picture of the week featuring many views of the harbor.  Please shoot us an e-mail at bostonharborbeacon@gmail.com if you have a great photo of the Boston Harbor you would like to share!

World’s End in Hingham

World’s End in Hingham was a great place to be this past Sunday with blue skies and temperatures approaching 70 degrees. The weather in the Boston area has been unbelievable lately and we are taking every opportunity we can to get to enjoy the outdoors.  It cost $10 to park at World’s End, but it has a number of scenic walking trails that are stroller-accessible.  A clear and unobstructed view of the city skyline could be seen right across the harbor:

Boston Harbor Migratory Birds

Hello and welcome to Boston Harbor Beacon!  This blog will be focusing on boating in the Boston Harbor.  We will be covering topics such as fishing, day trips, maintenance tips, navigational issues, and other boating-related subjects.  For non-boaters, we will also be writing posts about how to get access to the Harbor Islands, tourist ideas, and historical information about the Boston Harbor.  Please follow Boston Harbor Beacon on Facebook and/or Twitter to get updates!

Boating season will be warming up soon, but in the meanwhile, the harbor provides a great arena to bird-watch.  Boston harbor and the surrounding coastlines fill up with migratory cold-weather birds starting in late October and lasting into the spring. Two of the most common are the Surf Scoter and the Common Eider. They are beautiful birds with puffin-like bills. Its hard to get close to one as they shoot across the surface of the water (or dive under) as you approach. Here is a nice shot of a Common Eider as he came up for a breath of fresh air.

Do you have any favorite places to watch migratory birds in the Boston Harbor?  If so, please leave a comment!
